Review: Notes from the Tilt-A-Whirl

I don't usually read a lot of books that don't tell a straight-forward story. This is the rare exception. "Notes from a Tilt-A-Whirl" is a book that stretched my idea of God and his creation. God is *bigger* after reading this book.

N.D. Wilson plays with words, stories, philosophy,
pictures, and ideas; seemingly random thoughts stringing together to form a cohesive whole, the way a pointillist picture does.

The author makes a case for the sheer, overwhelming greatness (and otherness) of God, and how truly amazing this world that He has made is. A world of darkness and light. That ache-in-your-chest feeling of yearning for what is outside of our frame of reference, for something bigger, that thing C.S. Lewis termed "Joy" - I found that again and again while reading this book.

There is language that might be offensive to some, but as the author says in the preface, it never rises to the shock value of the words of such writers as the prophet Ezekiel.

A truly beautiful book - a funny, poetic, thought-provoking look at the Artist's work. This is a book that doesn't take itself too serious, but might just rock your world view. It is a wild ride - you never know from one page to the next where you are going to end up. But it is a ride well worth it.
