LifeWays - Birgit's Blog
So I shall go domestic and post a recipe - I got this one several years ago from my friend Clare who is from England and a stickler for the fact that "scone" rhymes with "gone" not with "cone".....
You can literally make these in under 5 minutes not counting baking time....
Buttermilk Scones
2 1/2 cups bread flour (you can also use whole wheat pastry flour, or half white, half whole wheat)
2/3 cup brown or white sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
Mix well
Add:
1 1/2 c buttermilk (or use milk/vinegar mixture to substitute)
2/3 cup melted butter
2/3 cup raisins, currants, or diced dried apricot
Mix, until all sticks together,
pat flat with your hand to about 1/2 inch thick, cut out with a biscuit cutter and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees until slightly browned.
We like these for tea time - they just seem very "Jane Austen-ish" :-)
Good as is, or serve with lemon curd, or whip real cream, mix equal parts whipped cream and sour cream, and top with that.....
