Current reading : "Reading Lolita in Tehran - a Memoir in Books" by Azar Nafisi.

It is an interesting book - about the life of an English Literature professor in Tehran before, during and after the Islamic revolution. Part autobiography, part literary criticism. When she talks about dress codes being superimposed on women, books and films being banned.....I keep thinking that I know those who would want to do the same here. Certain books that people should not have the right to read. Clothes that they shouldn't have the right to wear. Let's make laws to make people moral.

It doesn't work. External controls can't make people more moral. Unless you can change hearts, all you do is drive immorality (whatever the powers-that-be definition of that is) underground. Make people hungry for what they cannot have.
Didn't work in Tehran. Wouldn't work here.
