I miss the liturgy.
There is something very comforting about the sameness and reliability of it, about the history, that those words have been sung back over the centuries, and some over millennia. After years, I attended a traditional German Lutheran service again when I went back the last time, and it unexpectedly brought tears to my eyes when the familiar invocation was sung.
When we lived in Germany, we went to a charismatic service once a month that included the liturgy (something that seems to be very rare) - but it was something else to go into an ancient cathedral, and for once see it filled with life instead of tourists, a couple thousand people singing together those ancient words.
What seemed dull and lifeless when I was a teen all of a sudden became a symbol of the Church through the ages, of standing side by side with the saints of old, before the throne of God.....
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be forever. Amen.
